A Germ
January, 2026
Tell them
you didn’t go seed collecting
and scarify the hull
by scratching, scraping,
nicking, freezing, and
setting ablaze
Tell them
you didn’t eagerly await
the germ,
and engineer its great escape,
that you didn’t make it a home
in your secret garden
Tell them
it didn’t mistake your singing voice
for running water,
that it didn’t sprout in the direction
of your attention,
heliotropic and
insatiable
Tell them
you didn’t love it.
Tell them
it didn’t grow.
