I like this. It transcends its own sadness while holding onto it by a thread.

the simplicity in the language you chose is so goddamn clever. amazing.

I feel that you should have (and could have) framed this as the poem it almost (and so very nearly) is and which some lines within it were crying out to be and weeping that they were not made so.

excellent in any event.

poignancy worked into the pencil sharpener.

Thanks Nick! I have done that with other 100-word stories. “Chopsticks” in my poetry collection was first a 100-word story.

I happen to know of a contest. Great job!! Had me feeling gut punched by the end.

Tragic but beautiful in the sense that they were both destined for roads less traveled. It works, Annie.

What a touching tale. It makes me want to stay married....and live. As I do both........... thanks for posting. The "one hundred word story" is a great format. I wasn't in the mood for a poem or anything drawn out at all. It was perfect. I'm gonna try it. All I need is a brief......... moment of clarity........

There's something so delightfully jarring about the "to whom" phrasing here. The diction is out of place, and changed the narrative voice in a really cool way.

It may concern.

I love little stories like this. A lot can be said in a few words.
