(Creative Nonfiction) "As a child, my mom would punctuate the end of fairytales by saying 'That’s fiction. There’s no such thing as happily ever after.'”
“Because these were my models for what ‘normal’ male attention looked like, I believed abuse was love. I thought marriage was an arrangement where a woman signs away her body for use by a man who has no interest in her as a human being…”
So powerful - so glad you found counter examples in your life; it is hard to see them sometimes, even when they are right before our eyes.
The first words written in rapid succession with a zip that somehow keeps me going through the rapid eye movements to discover an innocent “puppy love” . An awkward age of discovery. The walk to a field of stars and an arm around a waist, a chin on a shoulder. Moments to cherish. Shooting stars in your eyes and a fairy tale that allows dreams to come true. If only all stories could end with just a kiss that lasts as long as it can. Then good bye. A memorable day in a hope chest put away.
The story really touched me as I can really relate
Thanks so much for reading Kathleen. I'm so glad you connected with it :)
