Baha I’m a musician that’s turned to poetry 😂. I resonated with a lot of this.. although it took a long time for people take my songs seriously even when they weren’t funny.
Making a living in art isn’t just hard, it’s damn near impossible. It’s great to remember that the art was always in you and not the mediums you choose.
Good stuff, Annie! Your teacher was almost right except he should have said there is a higher chance to make money exploiting musicians than exploiting poets…but making money actually doing it, yeah right. Incredible that even the most talented amazing folks with what seem like decent careers are not even getting by. Maybe things will be better for creative people one day.
I know far too many people who decided they wanted to learn to play guitar and so went out to buy the cheapest one the can find. Their experience tends to be like yours- it sounds bad and is uncomfortable to play so they give up.
It's worth spending the extra money to find an instrument that feels and sounds right to you. There's also a myth that you should start out playing acoustic. There are things to learn by playing acoustic instruments but you can worry about that later if you stick with it. Electric guitars are easier to play because they have lighter strings and thinner necks. The down side is that you need to spend money on a decent amplifier as well.
Thanks for reading and commenting! Thankfully I have a much better guitar now haha. I still play. I've never gotten into electric, but I'm going to start teaching again and some of those will be electric guitar students so I'm thinking of buying one. Any recommendations for a first timer who's only played acoustic?
I’ve never been a gear head and it’s been a long time since I taught so things might have changed so take what I say with a grain of salt. I’ve always like Ibanez guitars- they make really solid instruments that get a really good tone considering the price point. I usually steer people away for squire teles/strats- they were cheaply made and had intonation issues.
But in the end the most important thing is that YOU like it and that it inspires you to play.
It’s always great to get a glimpse of your past, thank you for sharing. Also I love the video of baby you singing your first song. It was quite the wonder wall of emotion — I will see myself out.

Glad you’re having fun and making rad stuff 🤘
That video is awesome, Annie! I read this the other day but wasn’t in a place to play it. You had me at sleeping with Clint Eastwood.
That's a really good music video. The music is great but the video editing is also really good.
Haha thanks Mike! Wish I could track down the guy who made it and pass on the compliment but that was 17 (🤯) years ago and I’ve lost all contact.
